WORLD POPULATION DAY 2017
FAMILY PLANNING: EMPOWERING PEOPLE, DEVELOPING NATIONS
In commemoration of the World Population Day, the Ministry of Health, United Nations Population Fund, PAHO/WHO and Lobi Foundation facilitated a dialogue regarding LARCs. The event was held on July 21 at the conference room of hotel Krasnapolsky. LARCs is Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives. In the opening remarks the Ministry of Health stated that our health policy is based on among other things prevention and access to quality health care. In addition, our health policy integrates the Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach and mainstreams the SDGs with emphasis on SDG 3, including sexual and reproductive health. The dialogue was well attended by several actors among which: ministry and civil society institutions related to family planning, gender and service delivery for special groups as well as youth groups such as the Youth Advisory Group of the UNFPA, Youth Advocacy Movement of Lobi Foundation and SDG Youth Ambassadors and Youth Parliamentarians. The facilitators presented relevant information of the different sectors concerned, such as their role in the introduction of LARCs, desirable modern contraceptive choices, medical emergencies, links between family planning and gender equality and youth development, and the legal and regulatory points of interest for the import and distribution of contraceptives.
All actors emphasized that contra conception is essential for family planning, and that every woman has the right to choose when she wants to be pregnant, and how many kids she prefers. Traditionally, the focus was on women, and men were less involved, even so that men were standing outside the roomswaiting until the baby was born. MOH wants to change this
and create a mind shift by engaging men and women towards family planning.
The day continued with a panel discussion on “Are LARCs the answer?”.The presentation and statements from the panel members related to the pros and cons, accessibility, availability and affordability. Emphasis was put on reaching special groups, among which Young people, to provide them with correct information and the cost effectiveness of LARCS. Last but not least it was stressed that information provision should be based on human right and consider the specific needs of the least developed groups, ethnic and cultural traditions, and the provision of friendly access to services.
